Award Winning Artwork for Half Moon Lake
Belfast Hills Partnership has been enabling local school children to get creative and to produce an award winning artwork at the Half Moon Lake site in West Belfast.
The Half Moon Lake, known locally as the ‘halfie’, is a hidden jewel just off the Suffolk road. Few people outside of the immediate locality know of the secluded crescent-shaped waterway’s existence. However, it is a key part of the rich industrial heritage Belfast. Today it provides a home to a wide variety of wildlife.
P5 pupils from St Oliver Plunkett’s worked with artist Eleanor Wheeler to explore the wildlife and heritage of their local area. The kids drew pictures of what the site meant to them which formed the basis for the artwork. The final mosaic depicts a map of the site with the children’s drawings of leaves and fish etched into the final piece.
The quality of the art piece was recently acknowledged during the West Belfast Partnership Community Environment Awards. It won first prize in the “Arts” category.
This was part of the Landscape Partnership Scheme. The Scheme ran from January 2012 to March 2018. As a result, the Scheme contains a wide portfolio of projects. These will continue to provide long term social, economic and environmental benefits for the areas surrounding the Belfast Hills.
